Guidelines for characters

General Guidelines

Appearances

Character design doesn't have to line up with the character's sex.

// Only semi realistic pelt patterns and colors. Your character can have a hue to their colors, for example a purple hued black, but the color must be recognized as the original color and not as the hue. In this case the color must clearly be black and not purple. See below our hue guide!

hue guide.png

When it comes to patterns please follow semi realistic fur patterning found in cats. Different tabby types, calicos and tortoiseshells, colorpoints, smokes, solids and two colored patterns are all allowed. You can mix different pattern types but do not stray too far from the original inspiration. See here a guide of different colorations and fur patterns in cats. Your character's pelt can also have vitiligo and they can be albino.

//Your characters can have different types of fur.

Kinky, curly, long, short, long in other places while short on others are all allowed. This also applies to whiskers allowed to be wiggly, curled, straight or frazzled!

// Your characters are allowed to have accessories and ''hair'' in their designs. For more information on what accessories are allowed, please scroll down.

//Eye colours must be somewhat realistic, so no rainbow eyes. However, colours like purple and red are allowed as well as different types of heterochromia.

//We do not allow conjoined twins or ´´split faced´´ cats.

//Some appearances are listed as rare traits. Please visit our rare trait page to see what they are.

//Have fun designing your character! We allow creative freedom but reserve the right to ask for changes in the design if it is deemed too unrealistic.

Biography
Family

//Your character's family must be named, if they know them, and they must follow the naming rules.

//Your character can have NPC kits, siblings and parents when you submit them. If you want to have biological kits or adopt some in roleplay you have to do assignments for it. You can host tryouts for NPC's.

Tryouts are hosted on the server using the tryouts forum!

//Your character can have a current or a former NPC mate.  You can have tryouts for the said ex or current NPC mate. However, when the NPC becomes a playable character you must do mate assignments for them to become roleplayable.

//You can create mate characters with someone as long as you do mate assignments for them. The assignments must be completed before the characters can be roleplayed.

//For having kits please read rules, assignments and our kit guide!

Identity

// Your character can be any gender and sexuality you want to, and neopronouns are allowed!  Know that they may not have the resources to physically transition in the wild, though, but will have herbs available if they would like to boost their hormones or affect their scent.

// Your characters are allowed to be in poly relationships.

History section

//Your character's backstory must contain content warnings if it requires them. Always consider the clan or loner groups dynamics and culture when creating a backstory for your character. For example something that would be viewed horrific in the clans could be seen as totally normal in the Sons of Blood and Storm.

// If your character is not a sage, your character can't receive omens/prophecies or have greater knowledge of herbs without staff permission! Regular warriors can have ‘’first aid’’ amount of knowledge in herbs and healer characters from any of the outsider groups can have the same amount of knowledge as a sage apprentice would, however the clan’s sages will always have more knowledge and practice.

// We do not allow sexual themes in characters' histories or portrayals of cannibalism.

//Some history story beats are listed as rare traits. Please visit our rare trait page to see what they are.

General

//Your character has to have one skill where they excel at and one that they suck at. Your skills and weaknesses have an effect on your character and to your clan (or loner group) as a whole. Apprentices and kits don't have a skill picked yet, as it's something you choose when they get their full name. Here is the list for you to pick!

//There can be only three (3) cats with the same prefix! Click here to see what prefixes are already in use.

Clan characters

// Names must be somewhat realistic, and no meme names such as Redneck or Mountaindew. Three part names such as Blueberrydew are allowed.

//Animal and plant species, as well as rocks and insect based names should be native to the Nordics (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.) Always try to use the logic ''would a cat living in the nordics know what this is?''.

For example a cat would not know any deep sea fish species as they would not come into contact with them, or any minerals that are deep within the foundation.

This means for example no tropical themed names like Koi- Coconut- Monkey- etc. This also means no American variant for the same species, for example caribou for reindeer.  Please see the resources page for name idea sources.

//Loners who join a clan must take on a clan name. For example ''Hiisiclaw'' is not allowed. Not even with a kittypet rare trait.

//Clan transfers are allowed but they need to be approved by the leader of the clan they want to join. See the current political climate in the Clan info page at the bottom!

//Wolf-, Bear-, Moose-, and Swan- are allowed prefixes! They are often given for a special reason.

//Lion, Tiger and Leopard are not allowed prefixes or suffixes as these clans do not believe in the ancient big cat clans like in the books. Lynx is the only allowed big cat prefix or suffix.

//There can't be multiple same prefix names for kits and apprentices in the same clan. For example no two Dawnkits in Mooseclan or Dawnkit and Dawnpaw in Mooseclan. There can be a Dawnkit in Mooseclan and a Dawnpaw in Wolfclan though.

Outsider characters
All characters that don’t live with the clans.

// Outsiders who wish to join a clan need to be approved by the leader.

// There are no active twoleg settlements anywhere near the clans, but sometimes they abandon boat cats to the forest, or kittypets run away from home. Twolegs are a thing of legends to cats and some don't believe them to exist at all. Cats with kittypet heritage are often boat cats, but can be regular house cats as well. Kittypet heritage is a claimable trait, please look at the rare list! In the world of The North Star, twolegs live in the late 20th century world.

//Loner names should follow a Nordic theme as well (preferably nature themed unless given explanation for something else). The names can be in Finnish, English, Norwegian or Swedish also. For example if an outsider character’s name is Moon it could also be Kuu or Måne.

//Mythological creature and divine/God names are allowed as long as they follow the Finnish folklore. For example; Hiisi, Akka, Ukko, Tapio, Väinämöinen.

//''Human'' names that are Finnish(or Finnish Swede) are allowed such as Aino, Eino, Tapani, Sven etc. Non Finnish names like Steve are not allowed. Please use this website to confirm the origin of your character name

//If your character has kittypet heritage rare trait, feel free to ignore all the loner naming rules above

//Please see the resources page for name idea sources.

NPC, Staff PC & Retired PC characters

//Retired PC = retired playable character
Character once roleplayed by a member that has been retired and taken away from their slot tracker. Also characters that belonged to members who were once part of TNS.
Unless taken from retirement these characters cannot be roleplayed with. You can interact with them only in dailies but not make plots around them. For example your character can share a meal with one but they cannot have kits with one.

// NPC = Non playable character
A character that has been created to be a npc/background character for another character. For example a family member, friend, mate etc. You cannot rp as them, but you can make plots around them as well as interact with them in long form rp’s, general writing and dailies. You don’t have to make all your characters' families into NPC’s. NPC characters follow the same guidelines as regular characters when it comes to character creation. Does not take up a character slot. NPC’s cannot be roleplayed by members without explicit mod permission. Staff can rp NPC’s upon request by their creators/owners.

// STAFF PC = Staff playable character
Characters that the staff/mod team plays together. Usually plot relevant characters.

Aging

Here a short guide how to determine your characters age and when to age them!

Keep in mind that characters age as time goes on in the real life. So a month is a moon.

Maximum age a cat can be before they have to pass of old age is 15 years (180 moons). With the rare trait ''Ancient'' your cat can live up to 20 years (240 moons).

Kits do not have to follow realistic aging steps. This means as soon as they are born they can run around and cause chaos. You can follow realistic growing up if you want to!

Height

Here a short guide how to determine the height of your character. Loners height should wary from Bearclan height to Swanclan's.

Heights are in centimeters(cm) and are measured from the ground to the base of the neck where shoulders and neck meet.
